Dean's Welcome Message Welcome to the UC Irvine School of Humanities. At UCI the opportunities for personal and intellectual growth most often associated with a small, selective liberal arts college merge with a broad range of opportunities offered by a larger research university: intellectual diversity, a first-rate library, and a faculty distinguished by a strong commitment to teaching as well as research. The School of Humanities includes those basic disciplines of language, literature, history and philosophy that deal with the multiple dimensions of human experience, individual and social, past and present. It is in the humanities that cultural literacy develops and historical, aesthetic, and ethical judgments are honed. At UCI, Humanities faculty teach and write on a wide range of subjects, from medieval drama to world history, visual studies to Southeast Asian-American experience.
The School of Humanities is one of the highest nationally ranked schools at UCI. Six of our Ph.D. programs are in the top 20 in the nation. Our MFA Program in Writing is ranked sixth in the nation and boasts a number of prizewinning alumni, including Pulitzer Prize winners. The International Center for Writing and Translation, a unique center established in 2001, is directed by renowned writer and human rights advocate, Ngugi wa Thiong’o. The School also sponsors an award-winning outreach program, Humanities Out There (H.O.T.), a partnership with local schools to enhance literacy. H.O.T. has become a model for university/school collaboration nationwide.
As Dean, my objectives include improving our quality and our national visibility, along with developing our humanities centers to foster research among scholars and provide a forum for debate on humanistic issues that concern our faculty and students as well as our surrounding communities.
