This course will explore figures of racial difference and racial mixture in postwar U.S. visual culture, with an emphasis on the crisis of visibility produced by images of blackness. We will address, on the one hand, the relations and politics of representation (especially in cinema) and, on the other, critical theories of race, gender, and sexuality, particularly as
they regard formations of state and capital.
