Humanities In the
Community
CALIFORNIA HISTORY-SOCIAL SCIENCE PROJECT
The California History-Social Science Project is an
educational partnership between Orange County schoolteachers
and the university. The primary focus of the CH-SSP is to provide
an institutional framework for collaboration between Department
of History faculty and K-12 history and social science teachers
in Orange County. The core of our project is the series of teacher-training
institutes we offer in the subjects of literacy, world
history and American
history. These institutes provide the basis for our ongoing
development of grade-appropriate curriculum that
responds to the challenges that teachers face in answering to
district and state standards.
HUMANITIES OUT THERE (H.O.T.)
Humanities Out There is an educational partnership between
the School of Humanities and the Santa Ana Unified School District,
in cooperation with UC Irvine’s Center for Educational
Partnerships and the California History-Social Science Project.
Founded in 1997, HOT now reaches more than 500 intermediate and
high school students and their teachers each year through its
workshops on humanities topics. Workshop readings, discussion
questions and writing exercises engage issues of historical significance
and contemporary urgency. HOT brings faculty, graduate students,
undergraduates and staff into direct dialogue with our counterparts
in the public schools in order to create a new community of scholar-citizens
united by shared values of intellectual inquiry, action through
creativity and civic inclusiveness.
THE HUMANITIES CENTER
The Humanities Center fosters intellectual dialogue
between the faculty and students of UC Irvine and the communities
of Orange County and beyond. Our goal is to promote a wide range
of interdisciplinary work in the humanities, and to facilitate
the sharing of that work with audiences within and beyond the
disciplinary units that we represent. The Center works to fulfill
these goals through awarding grants to faculty and graduate students
for research in the humanities and sponsoring lectures, conferences
and other events on campus.
HUMANITECH®
HumaniTech® is a
link-both hands-on and intellectual-that connects Humanities
with technology by serving Humanities faculty and graduate
students in the discussion, incorporation, problem solving
and facilitation of technology in their teaching and research.
