Made on a budget of $10 million, 2001: A Space Odyssey has been described as the world’s most expensive experimental film, and Hollywood’s most cryptic foray into science fiction. The result is a visually stunning rumination on the interrelationship between humankind and technology.

A computer (the ever courteous HAL) plots to murder its human handlers, and space explorers encounter extraterrestrial beings, yet despite these familiar narrative elements and the film’s breathtaking special effects, 2001 is unlike any other science fiction film. The film won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
