My great love is music. Its ability to mesmerize, transform and even transplace a listener fascinates me. This power is pervasive among musical genres. The affects are highly subjective yet also yield a sense of community. The transition from subjective listener to communal identifier forms the base of my research interests. I am currently pursuing the notion of identity altering as it connects to literary descriptions of musical experience in a selection of tales by E.T.A. Hoffmann. I am particularly interested in descriptions of listening and the listener’s state during a musical experience and during the reporting or recording of a musical experience and how these affect the formation of musical meaning as it relates to critiques of communal identity.
