Raised in southern Utah, I briefly attended and graduated from Dixie College, now Dixie State College, before moving to Hamburg, Germany to serve as a missionary and representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Upon returning, I began my study of German literature at Brigham Young University, where I received a BA and a MA. I worked with Dr. James K. Lyon on my masters thesis, entitled Rethinking Trümmerliteratur: The Aesthetics of Destruction. Ruins, Ruined Language, and Ruination in the Works of Böll, Grass, and Celan.
