What kinds of grants receive priority funding? The faculty advisory board is currently giving priority to projects that benefit public activities on campus, graduate students' research needs, junior faculty, and applicants who have never received money from the Center.
Faculty members who've recently received Center funding for individual research grants have low priority, and so are unlikely to receive support in lean budget cycles. In general, faculty should wait at least three years after receiving support to apply again.
Faculty members with startup funds are not eligible for Humanities Center grants for individual research. For new faculty, startup funds usually are given for a three year period. New faculty are eligible to apply for collaborative grants for public events on campus.
Graduate students applying for individual research grants will be funded to a maximum of $1500 for dissertation research. Graduate students must be advanced to candidacy in order to apply for individual research grants.
Who makes funding decisions? Proposals are reviewed by the Center's faculty advisory board. The board -- comprised of faculty from the School of Humanities --reviews proposals individually, then meets to make final funding decisions as a group
Are faculty/grads from outside the School of Humanities eligible for grants? Humanities Center grants are only available to faculty and graduate students within the School of Humanities. The Center funds collaborative conferences, symposiums, and events with other schools on campus, but a member of Humanities must apply for the grant and it must be administered through their home department.
I'm an adjunct professor or lecturer -- can I apply for a Center grant? Adjunct professors and lecturers are eligible for Center collaborative grants if they are employed by UCI for the period in which the award will be used. The Center is not awarding individual research grants to adjunct professors and lecturers at this time.
Are Emeritus faculty eligible for Center grants? Emeritus faculty are not eligible for Center grants.
I received a grant and completed my project -- what's next? As indicated in award letters, grant recipients are required to submit a report of research activities at the conclusion of their project. The report must include both a narrative and a report of expenditures.
The narrative should briefly explain how your award helped you complete the project; if and how the project contributed to any ongoing research; and, if a graduate student, how the project contributed to your dissertation.
Your report should also include a simple listing of expenditures:
Travel -- airfare to Mexico City -- $500
Lodging -- three nights' stay, including meals -- $150
Other expenses -- membership to research collection -- $50
Total Expenditures -- $700
I received a grant -- who handles the paperwork? Paperwork is handled by your department, according to departmental policies and procedures. Grant funds are typically released as a reimbursement after your project or event. For more information, please contact your department manager or financial administrator.
What is the expenditure deadline for my grant? Expenditures for projects funded by the Center must be processed by the date indicated in your award letter. The Center is NOT able to extend the deadline stated on your award letter.
What are allowable expenditures for a Center grant? •Travel and travel-related expenses directly related to the project (no first class or business class travel allowed)
•Honoraria for conference participants (up to $500)
•Supplies relevant to the project (excluding computers, printers, and other hardware)
•Fees to access research collections, library archives, etc.
•Other research (i.e. photocopies) or conference (i.e. posters) expenses, as appropriate
•Faculty ONLY: manuscript preparation or publication subsidies, excluding indexing (up to $1500)
What are unallowable expenditures for a Center grant? •Computers, printers and other hardware
•Lodging (funded only in exceptional cases) and rental subsidies are typically disallowed
•Language study (funded in exceptional cases only)
▪The hiring of research assistants
•Graduate Students ONLY: manuscript preparation or publication subsidies
What kinds of travel expenses are covered by my grant? Most travel expenses (i.e. air and ground transportation) are covered by Center grants, excluding lodging (which is funded in exceptional cases only). Per University policy, only economy/coach airfare will be covered. The Center does not provide for first class or business class airfare costs.
If you intend to travel outside of the United States, please check the State Department's website for current information on the country to which you intend to travel for research.
What other funding resources are available for research and/or conference travel? Faculty: for information about research & travel awards, contact Lien Nguyen in the Humanities Dean's Office at x46741 or Lien Nguyen. The Office of Research also provides information about Conference & Workshop Support.
Graduate Students: for information about Humanities research grants or conference travel awards, contact Rosie Humphreys at x44303 or email. For information about Summer International Travel Grants, contact the International Center for Writing & Translation at icwt@uci.edu.
Where can I find funding for computers, printers and other hardware? Faculty: information about the Faculty Desktop Computing Initiative is available from Research & Graduate Studies.
Graduate Students: for information about the laptop program -- which allows graduate students to "check out" a laptop for one year -- please contact Rosie Humphreys at x44303 or rjhumphr@uci.edu.
Academic Coordinators: limited funding is available from the Humanities Dean's Office for computer equipment. These funds are administered and awarded by HumaniTech. For more information, please contact Barbara Cohen at x47445 or blcohen@uci.edu.
Where can I find information about other funding opportunities? Research & Graduate Studies is an excellent resource for both intramural and extramural funding sources.
The International Center for Writing & Translation also has funding opportunities.
The Research Development page on the School of Humanities website offers information on UCI and University-wide funding opportunities.
I'm planning on living/studying abroad for the summer, can I apply for a rental subsidy? The Center typically does not fund rental subsidies and general living expenses. In this case, your proposal could include travel and research costs only.
I'm planning on doing research abroad, am I eligible for Center funding? Yes! Center grants may be used for international research travel. Graduate students may also want to consider applying for a Summer International Travel Grant from the International Center for Writing & Translation. For information about their guidelines, please see their website or email icwt@uci.edu.
Please check with with the State Department's website for travel advisories and current information on countries you intend to travel to for research.
Does the Center fund "per diems?" The Center typically does not fund per diems.
I won't be able to spend my grant by the expenditure deadline -- what should I do? The Center is NOT able to extend the deadline stated on your award letter. Please contact the Center if you will not be able to use your award. Depending upon your project, you may be advised to re-apply during a later grant cycle.
Can I apply to more than one funding source for the same project? Yes! Due to the volume of proposals the Center receives, not all projects are funded (or fully funded). You are strongly encouraged to apply for other funds for your project. Research & Graduate Studies provides information about both intramural and extramural funding sources.
My project was not funded -- can I apply again? Due to the volume of proposals the Center receives, not all projects are funded. The advisory board's decision does not necessarily reflect the merit of your project or the quality of your proposal. Do consider re-applying in the next funding cycle, keeping in mind the board's current funding priorities. If you have any questions about the status of your proposal, or the funding decision received, please contact the Center at x43638 or hctr@uci.edu.
Where can I get help preparing my proposal? We are here to help you and answer any questions you have as you prepare your proposal. Please contact the Center at x43638 (824-3638 from off-campus) or hctr@uci.edu .
