İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ The purpose of this course is to introduce students
to the impact of the military ethos on premodern Japanese society. To this end,
the primary readings are heavily drawn from literature, supplemented by
translations of a variety of documents and essays of a more analytic nature.
The primary emphasis will be on the rise and transformation of the warriors as
a dominant if not the ruling class in Japan, but in order to understand what
happened to them, it is necessary to examine the social, economic and cultural
changes that took place during their heyday as well as their interaction with
other members of society in the arenas of politics, economics, society, and
culture.
IT
IS THE POLICY OF THE SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES THAT STUDENTS MUST DO ALL OF THEIR
ADDS AND DROPS PRIOR TO THE END OF THE SECOND WEEK OF CLASS (JANUARY 18, 2001)
