Although the University of California, Irvine was only founded in 1965, the Department of History has already achieved a high standard of excellence in teaching and historical research. UC Irvine's Graduate Program in History combines a distinctive approach to graduate study with an outstanding faculty. It is particularly noted for its encouragement of interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship and for its focus on forward-looking historical methods, theories and subject areas. The relatively small size of the graduate program allows for close collaboration between students and faculty and programs of study tailored to individual interests and goals.

The Department's faculty is strong in many areas: East Asia; Gender and Sexuality; Latin America; the United States; and World History, among others. In all of these fields, we encourage students to think beyond traditional boundaries and historiographies and to incorporate theoretical influences into their scholarship.

Our graduate program also offers an array of opportunities for outreach to the local community. We participate actively in the Humanities Out There (HOT) program. HOT is an educational partnership with Santa Ana Unified School District that reaches more than five hundred students and teachers each year through workshops on humanities topics. The History Department also works closely with the California History and Social Science Project, a professional development program for K-12 teachers.

Our graduate students go on to an array of successful careers and academic positions. UCI graduates have held tenure-track positions at UCLA, University of Missouri, Temple University, University of Wisconsin, California State, Los Angeles, and UC Santa Cruz.
