UCI History Department
History Graduate Program - Information for Potential International Applicants

If you are neither a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident, before you apply for admission to the graduate program in History, there are several facts of which you need to be aware:

Extremely distinguished foreign applicants may be eligible for UCI’s most prestigious fellowship awards. In most cases, however, except for the possibility of two or three quarter teaching or research assistantships beginning in the second year of study, the Department of History has no financial support available to foreign students for their complete course of study in history at UCI. Teaching Assistantships are half-time positions which pay approximately $4,800 per quarter. If you are a non-native English speaker and plan to TA at UCI, PLEASE be sure to complete the TSE (Test of Spoken English) BEFORE leaving your home country. Research assistantships, which are available less often, are reimbursed on an hourly basis and are usually substantially less than 50% (the maximum percentage of UCI employment allowed for full-time students).

In addition to registration fees, foreign students are responsible for non-resident tuition for their entire time in the program (normative time for a Ph.D. in History at UCI is seven years). Once they have been advanced to Ph.D. candidacy, normally in their ninth enrolled quarter, foreign students are eligible for a 75% reduction in non-resident tuition for an additional three years (UCI’s definition of normative time is SIX years). One-quarter non-resident tuition fellowships for foreign students have been awarded, but rarely.

For 2005-06, a minimum of $37,712 per single foreign student is estimated to be required for living and educational expenses for the nine-month academic year (if applicable, add $4,000 for a spouse, $3,000 for each child, and at least $4,000 for each summer spent here to this sum). This amount includes the above-mentioned non-resident tuition (now $14,694), which may increase each year, as may fees (now $8,810). Tuition and fees must be paid in full prior to the beginning of each quarter. Spouses or dependents on non-immigrant visa status are very rarely permitted to accept employment of any type. This information and other requirements are available on the International Center website: http://www.ic.uci.edu. and on the Office of Graduate Studies website: http://www.rgs.uci.edu/grad/prospective/inter_foreign.htm..

Upon admission, you will be asked to verify, in the form of official bank certifications, the amount and source of your financial resources. For 2004-05, documentation for a minimum of $37,712 is required. Upon arrival at UCI, you will need at least $4,500 for initial costs. Because there is an estimated 18-month wait, please consider applying for on-campus housing as soon as you submit your application to graduate study; information and application form: http://www.housing.uci.edu/gfh/application.htm.

We hope this information provides you with a complete picture of your financial obligations and will permit you to make an informed decision concerning your application for admission to graduate study in the Department of History at UCI.
