History Graduate Program - Supplemental Instructions
Winter 2004 Applicants for the MA degree program are not eligible for fellowship nomination
nor for teaching assistantships. The MA program is designed for working students
and may be taken part-time.
Applicants who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents are usually
NOT eligible for fellowship nomination, though exceptional foreign applicants are
sometimes nominated.
All qualified applicants for the Ph.D. with completed files will be considered
for fellowship nomination. Though there are some multi-year fellowships/assistantships
for exceptionally-qualified students, most Diversity--please read Diversity
information on the RGS website thoroughly to determine your eligibility before
submitting a Supplemental Application--and non-Diversity awards are for the first
year of graduate study only. However, all students who successfully complete their
first year of study and are making satisfactory progress toward the Ph.D. have an
excellent chance of being awarded two or more quarters of teaching assistantships
during their second through sixth years. Research assistantships and readerships
are also periodically available.
Applicants who are U.S. citizens may request applications for state and federal
aid from the UCI Office of Financial Aid:

administered by the Department of History.
Those interested in on-campus housing need to submit an application to Housing
Administrative Services as soon as possible:
http://www.housing.uci.edu/. There isa 12-18 month waiting list for some kinds
of accommodations.
Please make certain that you complete your GRE examination early enough for us
to receive the results before DECEMBER 15. We do not require the history subject exam.
As the paper-based exam is no longer available in the U.S., please call 800-967-1100 or
a Prometric Testing Center (inside Sylvan Learning Centers) to make an appointment to
take the exam; check the Educational Testing Service website (ets.org) for information
on other testing sites. Test scores are available immediately so that you can phone or
email them to us if you are under time constraints.
In addition to the
instructions in the electronic "Application for Graduate Admission," please take
careful note of the following specific directions for applications to the Department
of History. Failure to comply may jeopardize chances of admission:
New graduate students in History must begin the program in fall quarter.
