UCI’s graduate program
in philosophy, ranked among the
top twenty in the United States, includes two complementary
units: the Department of Philosophy in the School of Humanities
and the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science in
the School of Social Sciences. The Philosophy Department
is renowned for expertise in a wide range of fields. Particular
strengths include the history of philosophy, especially
the ancient, medieval, and early modern periods, and the
Continental tradition extending from Kant through Nietzsche
and Husserl to twentieth-century existentialism. As the
study of great thinkers of the past gives one perspective
on today’s philosophical debates, so the study of today’s
philosophical debates gives one insight into great thinkers
of the past. Contemporary work in metaphysics and epistemology,
philosophy of mind, moral and political philosophy accordingly
forms an integral part of the Philosophy program.
Because the courses of
our sister department, Logic
and Philosophy of Science, are cross-listed as Philosophy
courses, our students are free to explore aspects of the
discipline specifically concerned with logic, mathematics,
and the sciences. At the graduate level, students in both
the Philosophy track and the LPS track begin with a set
of core requirements in standard philosophical fields, then
specialize according to their individual preferences. An
undergraduate major is offered by the Philosophy Department
but not by LPS.
