2008: Short Story Collection

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Irvine invites submissions for the 34th Annual Chicano/Latino Literary Prize.

The yearly call for entries is genre specific, rotating through short story collection (2008), poetry collection (2009), drama (2010), and novel (2011). Entries will be accepted only in the genre announced. We are now accepting entries in the genre of short stories.

Prizes: First: $1000.00, publication of the collection if not under previous contract, and transportation to Irvine to receive the award; Second: $500.00, and Third: $250.00.  (No travel allowances for the second and third prizes)

Author Requirements:

  1. Only one entry per author will be accepted.
  2. Author must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.

Manuscript Requirements:

  1. An unpublished  full-length collection (Spanish or English)
  2. 175 typed pages minimum (No Exceptions--175 pages or more)
  3. Double-spaced
  4. Page numbers on all pages
  5. 3 Bound copies required (professional or in any type of binder)

  6. Submit electronically (on a diskette or as an attachment sent to cllp@uci.edu)

  7. First Page should contain:
    1) Chicano/Latino Literary Prize
    2) Title
    3) Writer's full name     (the author's name must not appear anywhere else on the manuscript)
    4) Address & telephone number
    5) Email Address
    6) Indication of citizenship or residence
    7)     If work is contracted to a publisher

  8. Second Page should be the title page with TITLE ONLY

 

 

  El Departamento de Español y Portugués de la Universidad de California, Irvine le invita a tomar parte en el Premio Literario Chicano/Latino.

El premio anual será de géneros específicos, alternando con: colección de cuentos (2008), colección de poesía (2009), drama (2010) y novela (2011).  Los manuscritos serán aceptados cada año solamente en el género anunciado.  Estamos ahora aceptando manuscritos en el género de cuentos.

Premios: Primero: $1,000.00, publicación de la obra si no está bajo contrato previo y pago de gastos de viaje a Irvine para recibir el premio; Segundo: $500.00; Tercero: $250.00. (Fondos no serán asignados para los gastos de viaje del segundo y tercer lugar)

Requisitos del  autor:

  1. Aceptaremos un sólo manuscrito por autor. 
  2. El autor debe ser ciudadano o residente permanente de los Estados Unidos.   

Requisitos del manuscrito:

  1. El manuscrito debe ser una obra entera en español o en inglés
  2. Debe ser un mínimo de 175 páginas escritas a máquina
  3. Debe ser a doble espacio 
  4. Debe paginar el manuscripto
  5. Debe ser encuadernado y sometido por triplicado
  6. Someter electronicamente (disco flexible o archivo adjunto mandado a cllp@uci.edu)
  7. La primera página debe incluir:
    1) Premio Literario Chicano/ Latino
    2) El título
    3) E    l nombre del autor (el nombre del autor no deberá aparecer en ninguna otra parte del manuscrito)
    4) Dirección y número de teléfono     5) Correo electrónico
    6) Una breve declaración de ciudadanía o residencia
    7)     Indicar si la obra está bajo contrato con una casa editorial
  8. La segunda página debe ser la pagina de título (con título solamente)
 
Deadline: Postmarked by June 1, 2008 (no  exceptions). Prizes will be announced in October, 2008. Manuscripts will be returned in November  2008 only if a stamped, self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage is included with the submission. Acceptance of prize implies contractual agreement to publish within the Prize award series if a previous contract does not exist before the submission deadline.   Plazo de entrega: La fecha limite para la entrega del manuscrito es el 1 de junio  2008, sin excepción.  Los premios serán anunciados en octubre del 2008. El manuscrito será devuelto en noviembre del mismo añ, solamente si se incluye un sobre franqueado con la dirección del destinatario.  La aceptación del premio implica un acuerdo contractual de publicar dentro de las series del premio, si es que no existe un contrato firmado previamente del plazo de entrega.
