NEW FIRST YEARS
Visit the SPOP website for more information about summer orientation and getting started at UCI.

Attention New Fall 2008 Transfer Students

Congratulations on your admission to the University of California, Irvine as a major in the School of Humanities.  On behalf of our faculty and staff, welcome to UCI!

The process of enrolling in the University can be a challenging experience, and this information is designed to assist you in your transition to UCI.  Please read the following checklist carefully and complete all steps.

1.  FILL OUT AND MAIL IN THE COVER SHEET FOR NEW TRANSFER ADVISINGIn order to enroll for Fall Quarter, you must attend an Academic Advising Session this summer.  To make a reservation to attend this session, you must follow the steps on the form, Cover Sheet for New Transfer Advising.  Once we have received the completed form and all of your unofficial transcripts, you will receive an email with information on how to sign-up for a summer advising session.

2.  ACTIVATE YOUR UCI NET ID.  Your UCI Net ID provides you with a free official UCI email account and will allow you to access many web-based services including signing-up for summer advising and registering for classes. Activate your UCI Net ID at www.activate.uci.edu.

3.  SIGN UP FOR A SUMMER ADVISING SESSION.  You are required to attend an Academic Advising Session this summer. The session will include a review of the School of Humanities requirements, policies and procedures, as well as an individual appointment with an academic counselor, and an opportunity to enroll in your Fall Quarter classes. The earlier you attend an Advising Session, the earlier you will be able to enroll in classes.  See the Cover Sheet for New Transfer Advising, for information on how to sign-up for a session.  The sessions will be held on the following dates:

4.  KNOW CAMPUS, SCHOOL, AND MAJOR REQUIREMENTS.  Read the requirements for your major along with the campus requirements for a Bachelor’s degree in the 2008-09 UCI General Catalogue.  The 2008-09 Catalogue will be available in early July and may be purchased at the UCI Bookstore, or viewed online at http://www.editor.uci.edu/.

5.  TAKE PLACEMENT TESTS.  Most transfer students need only to take language placement exams as the School of Humanities requires two years of college-level language other than English (or equivalent) for all majors.  In most cases, if you completed the fourth semester of college-level language other than English (Intermediate/II) you have completed the School of Humanities language requirement.  If you have Advanced Placement (AP) credit, please refer to the Advanced Placement Chart in the 2008-09 UCI General Catalogue.  Otherwise, please review the information below and, if necessary, visit the Academic Testing Center website at http://www.testingcenter.uci.edu/ for test registration dates and details.

  • If you are planning to enroll in Spanish you must take a placement exam, unless you have completed a college-level course.
  • If you are planning to enroll in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese you must take a placement exam regardless of your background in the language.
  • If you are planning to enroll French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, or Russian placement exams are not required--though for students who have background in French or German, the placement exam is recommended to ensure success in UCI courses.  If you have background in any of these languages, the appropriate level in which to enroll will be discussed at your summer advising session.

6.  CHECK THE UCI MY ADMISSIONS SITE.  Be sure to check your MyAdmissions@UCI site at
https://www.admissions.uci.edu:8443/cgi-bin/maa_uci.cgi regularly for Admissions updates.

7.  ENROLL IN CLASSES.  When you attend an Academic Advising Session this summer, the enrollment “hold” currently on your record will be removed, allowing you to enroll in courses.  Course offerings for Fall Quarter 2008 can be viewed on the Schedule of Classes Website at http://websoc.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc.  Additionally, detailed Humanities course descriptions are available at http://www.humanities.uci.edu/undergrad/courses/courses.php.

8.  PAY FEES. Fees must be paid and received by September 15th at 4:30 PM to maintain your course registration.  Postmarks do not apply.  A Zot Bill for fall fees will be sent to your UCI email address so be sure you are actively checking this account.

9.  DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ENROLLMENT IN CLASSES. During September 18th through 24th, verify your course study list via WebReg and check for changes in course meeting times or locations or cancellations.  If necessary, you can also make changes to your course schedule at this time.

10.  ATTEND NEW STUDENT CONVOCATION AND TRANSFER WELCOME.  On Monday, September 22nd, plan to attend the New Student Convocation.  This event will be followed immediately by the School of Humanities Transfer Welcome and Orientation and a free barbeque.   You will be receiving an email announcement with more information in early September.

11.  VISIT IMPORTANT UCI WEBSITES.  These web sites will provide you with important and useful information:

Classes begin on Thursday, September 25th.

If you have any questions, please call (949) 824-5132.  We look forward to seeing you this summer and to welcoming you to the School of Humanities in the Fall.

If for any reason you do not intend to pursue the major you were admitted to in the School of Humanities, contact us immediately for further instruction.
